Translation—from political theory to militant writing to literature—has often marked historic turning points, introducing ideas and terminology rippling across time like seismic aftershocks. With every translation, the book is revealed to itself as another. The Time of Translation seeks to reflect on the moment when a translated work enters a new context, and the kinds of impacts—or absence thereof—it may generate. We invited authors and translators to share an encounter with a translation that marked them, and situate such encounters within the history of the book itself. What constitutes a translation's "timeliness" at any given time? How can translation create spaces of solidarity beyond the demands of a struggling market, forming bonds across contexts that most need them in a renewed internationalism that reconnects, more overtly, urgencies at once literary and political.
