Douglas Crase met James Schuyler in summer 1973 at a joint birthday party for John Ashbery and Darragh Park in Sagaponack, NY. He and his now husband, Frank Polach, would later be the Doug and Frank of Schuyler's poem "Dining Out with Doug and Frank." His collected essays, On Autumn Lake, include a memoir described by Richard Howard in The New York Times as "the best single essay on Schuyler I know." He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for his poems and essays.
