Carlos "CJ" Chavarria (b. 2003 Houston, Texas) is an artist, primarily a painter, based in New York. He is currently studying at The Cooper Union and was a part of the 2024 Yale Norfolk session. His work is not attached to any singular genre, style, or approach to painting. Rather a conversation between automatic drawing, found photos, the history of painting, and stream of conscious writing. Exploring personal, cultural, and political narratives around identity, geography, and memory; and the overlap, simultaneity, and slippage of said narratives. His work seeks to ask, challenge, learn, and unlearn how we are conditioned to see and proposes to its viewers to be present with painting.
