Gabrielle Civil is a black feminist performance artist, poet and writer, originally from Detroit, MI. She has premiered fifty performance works around the world is the author of the performance memoirs Swallow the Fish (2017) and Experiments in Joy (2019), both published by The Accomplices. Her poems have recently appeared in Water Stone Review, Poem-a-Day from the Academy of American Poets and Bone Bouquet. She teaches creative writing and critical studies at California Institute of the Arts and lives in southern California. The aim of her work is to open up space.
