Workshop

From The Black Poets to The Last Poets — 10-Session Workshop with Ama Birch

Black poetry has changed the English language. Utilizing free verse, form poetry, vernaculars, and socio-political content that critiques and often helps to move social change and justice forward. Black poetry can be so extricating for the listener, the reader, and the author. During this ten-week workshop, some of the poets we will be reading or listening to are Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Michael Harper, Sonia Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, Margaret Walker, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Dudley Randall, and The Last Poets. These poems will be inspiration for the poems written, workshopped, and revised. This workshop utilizes Dudley Randall’s classic anthology, The Black Poets.
