Little poem

Charles de Agustin

You’re focused on my voice
I’m telling you to imagine a face, a human face
The human is facing the camera, gazing straight at you

Be clear about what you mean, or do, or say
The crux of all things
Whether you think people are selfish or not

You feel the machine churning all around you
You feel the rumble of the financial district
The enemy is screaming in your face
You’re supposed to be a de-escalator, or an escalator

People pacing, talking to themselves, looking pensive, having a good time

Blue-chip artist trashed at the opening dinner
He makes work about colonialism
He is joyously discussing politics
“I’m a bourgeois Marxist” he says
I smirk while my stomach twists into knots
I’ve been doing that a lot recently

Seduction from Whole Foods
Stealing from Whole Foods
Sleepy from Whole Foods

Say something important
Little scribbles on a piece of paper
Stomping from above, transcending recognition

The Zionist says that I’m anti-Israel, I respond yes
The Zionist says that I’m anti-America, I respond yes
The Zionist asks how I can believe that we do not need borders, I respond it is rather easy
The Zionist screams that I’m not living in reality, I respond I've never known reality better

I grab my childhood sense of wonder by the throat and beg my posture to stay
It happened very fast, you’re submerged
There is a jolt
A consequence
There is wind against every part of your body
You are not worried about breathing, breathing is nothing to worry about
