The Poetry Project

this is a photo of green

Julie Novakofski

this is a photo of blue
this is a photo of my family
this is a photo of my front porch in shadow
this is a photo of me standing
over the stairs, my head is the bushes
this is a photo of teal, the curtains
the red house with tassels, glowing
this is a photo of black
this is a photo of purple

in this photo the moon is hidden
in envelopes, my old negatives
how the photo augments memory?
it replaces it

it fancies this photo of me
drawing you, body is a language
so is making faces
relationships

that is the dead tree
this is actually me

this is fuschia
this is the present
for every friend you make an image
that looks like a word
that looks like a stanza
sometimes, that is it
a sonnet or it didn’t happen
or it is you and you look just
you look like a color

a photo of a cake
this is a photo of the language
you created for me
this photo of green she inherited
it is really a photogravure
dad painted over
