In an entry in Piece of Cake, a collaborative journal co-authored with Lewis Warsh, Bernadette Mayer argued: "The thousand episodes the mind enjoys can make a book in a minute, if only you'd write it." This ten-week workshop at the Poetry Project will engage Mayer's prolific writing, ranging from her month-long documentary project Memory (1975, reissued 2020) to her recent Works and Days (2016). We'll both read Mayer's expansive poetry together and use her compositional techniques and list of writing experiments to generate work of our own, exploring the form of the journal and strategies of collaborative writing.
